With the release of the Italia 2.0 Jersey and Bibshort, which feature a modern take on a retro look for the Italian National Cycling team, comes the Italia 15 Sock, which shares the concept with the best current sock yarn available and complex functional construction, but a clean, simple look featuring the Italian flag stripes on your choice of a white or dark blue sock with a tall cuff.
The sock has a hybrid construction that favors support, breathability, and durability over direct airflow and ultra-light weight. The expected reinforcement and minimal seaming found at the toe and heel zones are superbly executed, as is the narrow but supportive arch band. The top and forward facing body of the sock is designed to breathe and transfer moisture while allowing some air in, but offer marginal stretch. You' find that more under the metarsal zone, around the heel zone and up the back of the cuff to about the logo zone. The cuff itself is folded over and for a soft finish and hold.
The entire sock is constructed of Meryl® Skinlife, which wicks moisture extremely well. It is also bacteriostatic via the addition of silver ions to the yarn, to keep your feet fresh and protected, which is not only desired, but required when you spend several hours a day on the bike, training or racing at the highest level. It is interesting that Castelli didn't opt for the lightest weight or coolest sock construction. Not that the Italia 15 will be out of place during the summer, but perhaps with Worlds in the Fall season, durability, comfort and support were graded slightly more important. The clean aesthetic and sharp color contrasts are ideal for a national team sock, and any fan will love them.
