Description
We have assembled a limited availability special run of Cervelo R5 Disc complete bikes in the 2019 Team Sunweb colorway. These frame-up builds are spec'ed with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9170 and PRO components, with a Dura-Ace R9170 C40 Wheelset. If you are looking for a distinctive Cervelo R5 Disc with a pro-level performance, Dura-Ace Di2 driven kit, look for further than this limited availability Excel Sports build.
The 2019 R5 Disc frameset carries a race proven geometry that suits an aggressive posture and tactics to match. The sub 900 gram frame offers exceptional lateral stiffness and incredible power transfer for rocket acceleration, while the tapered headtube and full carbon Cervelo R5 Disc fork ensure that stiffness conveys to the front end of the bike as well. Cervelo's engineers developed the Squoval.Max tubeset to optimize the high end carbon fiber. The proven square-oval tubeset has evolved over the years, with the Max moving to improve the overall stiffness and aerodynamics, and is most easily identified by the seat tube and matching seatpost, which now have a D-back shape largely to improve air flow through to the rear triangle. Fear not, the legendary R-series ride quality is barely affected. The R5 is still the most compliant pro-level race bike we have had the pleasure to experience.
The geometry is somewhat long and low; really a pro-style set-up. Cervelo serves a wider audience with the fantastic R3, but re-envisioned the R5 for an aggressive posture, shortening the headtube and lowering the bottom bracket from the previous version. The lower center of gravity and overall weight distribution contribute to the dead perfect handling and excellent stability- a difficult balance for a race geometry bike design. The fork has been stiffened to handle the stress of disc brake forces at the dropout, with a minor sacrifice in comfort for some used to the more compliant rim brake version. The BBright 79mm bottom bracket shell is used to create a rear triangle with oversized, side specific chainstays that keep the R5 dead center while accelerating, carrying and countering the right-side emphasis of the drivetrain. As with the fork, the rear triangle has been modified, mostly unseen, to manage the stress of disc brake forces along with drivetrain requirements. The use of hydraulic disc brakes and moving to thru-axles front and rear allow the design to accommodate greater tire clearance, with a 28mm tire fitting the fork and frame even on a 25mm external width rim.
Cervelo has developed the FutureProof interfaces and internal routing system to be flexible for hydraulic lines, mechanical or electronic shifting, even an eTap specific set-up. You are able to keep the set-up clean and organized, with real aerodynamic benefit. The disc brake interfaces are the Flat Mount style, while the front thru-axle spacing is 12/100mm with the rear at 12/142mm. The1½ to 1⅛" tapered fork steerer and headtube ride on an FSA IS-2 headset.
Shimano is ubiquitous across the pro peloton with Dura-Ace Di2. The R9170/R9100 Di2 drivetrain and overall hydraulic disc groupset is simply the best- performance, durability, reliability. Just ask Team Sunweb. Di2 remains the platinum standard for electronic shifting with speed and precision that has yet to be matched. The Di2 system employs the e-Tube modular wiring system, along with in internal seatpost battery and handlebar end junction/port for USB cable charging and connection to the Shimano e-Tube website for firmware updates, shift button customization, and trouble shooting.
The Di2 Dual Control electronic/hydraulic levers are joined by the Di2 front and rear derailleurs, Flat Mount hydraulic disc calipers, 50-34 Hollowtech II crankset and BBright BB, 11-30 cassette, chain, and 160mm front / 140mm rear Center Lock disc brake rotors. We choose a wide gearing range that is perfect for mountain and hill usage, but that is also the most popular combination we sell for those favoring the in vogue higher cadence pedaling style. The Shimano hydraulic disc system features a safe, simple and reliable mineral oil system. The disc calipers and finned brake pads have been engineered in conjunction with IceTech for optimal power and heat dissipation. The collaboration extends to the 160mm front and 140mm rear Ultegra rotors, which employ a sandwich steel/aluminum/steel construction and a shroud system that releases heat with clean airflow as you ride.
Shimano's wheels are heavily ridden by pros, and are among the best for all day, every day use. Are they the lightest? No, but they are fast, have low freehub drag, and are comfortable to side, even in miod-section carbon like this Dura-Ace R9170 C40 Disc Wheelset. Continental's Grand Prix 5000 tires in the 700x25 size offer grip, speed, and low rolling resistance and a perfect ride quality match to the frameset and wheels. We opted for a tubed set-up, so you could make the personal choice of tubes or tubeless.
Shimano's PRO component line has won market share with clean looks, impressive quality, lightweight, smart design and a proven pro cycling sponsorship heritage. The 31.8mm diameter compact, handlebar and sexy stem are from the PRO VIBE Alloy line-up, and have Di2 wiring integration. Stiff, strong, light and resilient, the VIBE series reflects real needs of many pro cyclists, who eschew carbon components, and have been developed to work perfectly with Di2 and Shimano Dual Control lever body design for a clean, ideal set-up. In selecting the saddle, we chose the light, sleek PRO Turnix Carbon in the 132mm (narrow) width. Just a reminder, Cervelo supplies their frame specific, lightweight SP18 Carbon D-Shaped seatpost.
