There are are many great multi-tools on the market. Some are super light, with just a few tools. Others seem to lack use logic. All too often the focus is on size and weight, for obvious reasons, but not enough attention is focused on usability. After all, when you need to actually use your multi-tool, functionality becomes far more important than 20 or 30 grams. Blackburn does put an emphasis on function, so their tools, such as the Grid 13, may not be the lightest, but are actually effective when making repairs on the road or trail.

Multi-tools have also evolved as bike fittings and equipment have changed. So while you will see the common Allen hex keys, smaller sizes are now commonly used on bike components, and Torx keys are crucial as well. The rectangular Grid 13 offers 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5 mm hex keys, with the 4, 2.5, and 2mm all being an L-style for better bolt access. T25 and T30 keys are the most commonly used Torx sizes, so you have those on board as well. With the proliferation of disc brakes across mountain, cross, multi-purpose and road bike, a disc brake pad spreader comes standard. A small flat head screwdriver keeps things simple, and disc pad tool also features a Presta valve core removal slot (helpful when adding sealant to tubeless tires) and a bottle opener.

Blackburn put time and thought into the layout and selection of tools so that you don't have to. The flat profile and reasonable size make the Grid 13 for any hydration pack, large saddle bag, or tool kit. At 145 grams, the sturdy tool isn't the lightest, but is one of the most effective multi-tools we have seen. And when you are stuck on the side of the road in the rain at dusk, or miles away from the trailhead with a mechanical, the best tool is the one that allows to quickly and safely get back on the back as soon as possible.
