Description

The Trentacinque series from Deda Elementi matches 35.0 mm diameter handlebars with 35.0mm diameter clamp stems, and was first widely released for road in 2011 and mountain in 2013. The concept is simple. Just as cyclists adopted the 31.8mm standard over the 26mm, the goal was greater stiffness of the stem body, strength of the clamp interface and handlebar and a larger zone of "connection", which are magnified when assembled. Trentacinque raised the stiffness levels, yet was ahead of the game, but as the carbon technology and frame design increased overall torsional resistance from the frame, and stronger tapered steerers distributed force over a larger lower bearing, the real benefits of the 35mm system began to shine through. It is now more prevalent for road and starting to dominate mountain cockpit set-ups on Enduro-style bikes
This Superleggera 35 Handlebar is the carbon 35mm option from Deda. The carbon is a new HR40 material, and with a new resin. Deda employs Nanotechnology resin with an engineered molecular pattern for a greater overall strength yet very light weight. Building off the 31.7mm Superleggera, with a compact shape and Deda's RHM (Rapid Hand Movement) design, the 35mm version adds superior stiffness and increases the structural capability of the carbon to attenuate road vibration. The 75mm reach and radius curve creates an ideal level set-up for today's shift lever bodies, and the 130mm drop is ideally sized for most hands, and provides easy reach to the brake levers. RHM refers to how quickly and easily the cyclist can change hand positions without restriction. The outer curve off the central bar stock is sloped perfectly so you drop and raise your hands from lever to drop and back up. At the same time there is a reasonable shoulder at that point for a resting position with firm bike control.
Perhaps the greatest concerns for many considering the Trentacinque system are around the long full 35mm top section. The first is how to mount accessories such as computer/head units and lighting. Thankfully many manufacturers have started offering 35mm mounts (which usually shim down to 31.8mm) or are simply available as aftermarket options. The second is perhaps less adaptable and is more of question for cyclists with small hands or shorter fingers. Handlebar tape adds more true diameter and circumference and many tapes now run 3mm or more in base thickness, which can nearly double when wrapped. With the Superleggera 35 Handlebar's vibration damping properties, one may not need thicker tape, and certainly the overlapping wrap need not be thick. Certainly those the smallest hands may simply not feel comfortable, but like with all such issues, these are personal decisions and one can simply hold the bar in their hand with gloves on before mounting to ensure a comfort level. Deda has also reconfigured their internal routing system for easier set-up and also have a drop-end access point for Di2 wires.
