While Mavic's rims have long been a staple of custom wheel builds around the world, but we are particularly intrigued by the UST tubeless compatible carbon rim options from the French wheel giant. For spokes we stayed with DT Swiss, and a longtime Excel best seller, the double butted, lightweight Revolution. The DT 240s standard road quick release rear hub weighs in at just 217 grams. The super stiff body and stout flanges are precision machined from aluminum. The simple design rides on an oversized alloy axle and finely made Swiss steel sealed cartridge bearings. Sealed aluminum endcaps can be easily removed without tools, while knurled ends offer some bite on the fork dropouts. Of course the true genius is the dual Star Ratchet system for the freehub action, which is not only a reliable set-up, but also quiet, fast, upgradable, and can be serviced easily without tools.

The CXP Pro Carbon 40 UST is the ultimate version of Mavic's historical "CXP" rims. The 100% woven carbon rim offers a 40mm deep profile with Mavic's proven iTgMax laser-treated brake track to deliver a predictable braking performance in any conditions. The 450 gram rim weight means relatively low rotational weight, yet impressive strength and inherent stiffness. The 19mm internal width UST tubeless ready rim comes with 25mm tubeless tape to give you ideal coverage, nipple washers and the UST tubeless valve and accessories. DT's stainless steel, double butted 14 / 17 / 14 gauge spokes have a springy quality at low weight, but can be laced at fairly high tension. The result is a completed wheel that is responsive, compliant and laterally efficient with a mid-section carbon rim such as the CXP Pro Carbon 40 UST. We have laced the rear wheel in a cross pattern (24, 28h are 2x/2x, 32h is 3x/3x), for great compliance, excellent power transfer and serious durability. The alloy ProLock nipples secure the whole assembly and work to ensure to maintain tension by reducing the risk of un-threading under the various loads experienced during use.

The joy of cycling is manifested via the many physical components that make up the bicycle.
