Description
All mountain riders have been pushing the equipment envelope for years. Stepping up from the serious requirements of aggressive trail riding to the greater speeds, bigger drops, and wider gaps of all mountain riding requires the right equipment. The 27.5 wheel size has changed the game, and the new frame designs and geometry that makes them ideal for such big riding also call for a fork that can handle the fantastic loads these riders will subject them to. The new 36mm Float 3 Position FIT4 forks are lighter, incredibly stiff, and have an amazing combination of ease-of-use along with nearly infinite tuning capability. This air adjustable 150mm travel version has been developed to match up nicely with the longer travel 27.5 frames, which rock new geometry that handles better in the toughest conditions. On the unrelenting terrain, this Fox Factory version fork is easy to adjust, offers a greater range of fine-tuning, and has unmatched small bump compliance to complement the plush range of full travel. Coming in at under 4.5lbs, this incredible Fox fork will be your trusted companion, not a burden.
With the larger stanchions of the 36mm forks, the damper cartridge was also made bigger. The new Fox FIT4 cartridge damper plays off the strengths of FIT3, and attacks it's weaknesses. Building off the fine tuning options of the excellent RC2 damper, the FIT4 is actually more adjustable and it's base set-up gives each position greater range. In the new 3-position system, like CTD before it, the closed cartridge provides three compression damping settings: Open, Medium, and Firm. Inherent in this nomenclature is the fact that trail conditions vary so much, that the Climb, Trail, Descend from the previous generation, though sounding simple, didn't really correspond to what riders experience. Greater range within each setting and better overall response was needed. The Fox Factory series forks not only get the three new settings, but also a 22-click low speed compression adjustment in the Open mode, creating a truly individual riding experience. Though you won't likely use it much in this set-up, the Firm setting tops out as a lock-out, which can be handy when getting to the trail or banging along on fire roads. It is in the Open mode that the all mountain crew will live, and the ability to adjust that low speed compression on the fly will pay efficiency dividends.
The 36mm Float series forks also get a new air spring system, which is lighter than its predecessor, and reduces the force required to initiate travel, delivering a highly sensitive response that does a much better job with small bump compliance. The Float system also now features automatic equalization of positive and negative air springs. just like Float shock technology. Riders can also fine-tune progressive of the spring curve by manually changing out air volume spacers in the Float system. This level of core-level tunability is new for Fox, and is not complicated to manage. Fox provides excellent instruction, and this is always available on the RideFox website.
The Fox Factory forks get the usual, impeccable treatment: Kashima-coat aluminum stanchions, magnesium crown and completely revamped fork lowers- including for the first time on the 36, Fox's excellent 15mm quick release axle. The disc 74mm post mount can handle 203mm rotors, and the exceptional aluminum adjustment hardware is both rugged and easy to use while riding. The tapered 1.5 steerer is stout and totally integrated with the crown for stiff, precise and zero deflection steering control. Combined with the 36mm stanchions, and lighter, stiffer, stronger lowers, the overall stiffness per weight is exceptional and more than capable of major abuse, however you choose to set it up. As you can see, the engineers changed and upgraded the overall ride platform, and how the rider can best tune it to their own needs. The level to which you can now go with a Fox fork far exceeds what was possible before. It is actually amazing that Fox has built such a tunable fork, with both full travel and small bump compliance as well as incredible stiffness at under 4.5lbs in a 150mm travel package. The lighter weight and increase in stiffness make the front end much easier to manage, all the better to maximize it's incredible suspension package.
