Description

Many original equipment wheels look pretty and can even be reasonably light, but the lack of overall rim and build quality shows through pretty quickly. And yet, once you buy new bike, a huge wheel upgrade may not be in the budget. There is a middle path, with the Mavic Aksium a great value not only due to the price, but the much higher quality build and the technology employed. Mavic has upgraded this version of the Aksium to a 17mm internal width, more capable of carrying 25-32mm tires than its narrower predecessor. The Aksium Rear Wheel features several of Mavic's excellent construction processes that deliver a much higher quality than one would expect at the price point. The 1015 gram rear wheel rides smoothly, and has a proven Mavic engagement system that is responsive, reliable and serviceable.

The 21mm profile rim is made from S6000 aluminum, which balances strength with manageable weight for the wider rim interface. Each spoke hole area has received Mavic's H2 Hammer Hardening process, which strengthens the spoke hole and adds material to prevent spoke pull through or cracking. The rim itself is has a pinned sleeve joint, which is then machined over on the brake track as part of the UB Control CNC machined braking surface process. All of these combine to create a strong rim that can handle the higher tensions required by the spoke system. The wheel tracks more truly, with less deflection, delivering unexpected performance.

The aluminum hub carries standard QRM steel cartridge bearings with an excellent seal systm. The clean, simple hub and spoke design enhances aerodynamic properties and makes for straightforward servicing. The 20 bladed steel spokes keep the ride smooth despite the tension, with a 2x drive and radial non-drive lacing, offering just enough give to ensure a smooth, comfortable ride over rough pavement. Mavic uses a brass nipple for durability and protection against galvanic corrosion. The freehub is the steel version of Mavic's FTS-L system. Durable and sure over many thousands of miles, this pawl engagement system is easy to service and easily replaceable if necessary.

Of course Mavic provides the 130mm BR101 quick release skewer, rim tape, and the basic instructions you may require. Pair this wheel with the Aksium front for a cost effective wheelset that outperforms it's price and weight. The set will roll smoothly, with stable ride and handling, as well as rapid acceleration, and deliver solid durability due to Mavic's technology and quality construction processes.
