One challenge for aero wheel manufacturers has been how to build a modestly weighted wheel with serious aerodynamics, durability and overall strength. Any heavier rider who has pushed an aero wheel into a corner or tried to jump up for the sprint can attest to this. Let's face it, many highly active US based cyclists and triathletes are fit, normal-sized people. There are many very competitive cyclists here that weigh anywhere from 170-200lbs, and beyond. Yes, some of the highest rated aero wheels at the top end of the market are fast, stiff and strong, but at what cost? The Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40C Wheelset doesn't dominate wind tunnel, though it does just fine. What it does offer is a real-life riding experience that can be trusted to perform, respond when pushed by a heavier rider, and remain true for thousands of miles without spoke wrench being used. The braking is also excellent when dry and good enough when wet. You won't have to feel the rim rubbing on your brake pads while you climb out of the saddle or waste energy worrying about durability, even at just 1558 grams for this 40mm profile all-around wheelset.
Mavic built these carbon rims with a 19mm external rim width (13mm internal) at a time when many manufacturers are going wider, based on a proven straight-on aero approach. To provide strength, manage the heat from braking, and deliver high spoke tension Mavic's TgMax resin system and aluminum core was used. This is a chemical bonding process that ties the directional carbon fibers to the rim in a manner that is stronger than simply bonding the two together. This system allows the engineers several advantages. First is the bonded assembly appears all carbon, and has better braking surface control to go with superior heat management from the aluminum core. Second the spoke holes are threaded into the aluminum, through the carbon using the same FORE technology found on top end alloy Ksyrium rims. An alloy insert that is carried on the spoke end is threaded into this reinforced area, creating a much stronger and serviceable external spoke nipple, which in turn allows for high, consistent, and reliable spoke tension. The end result is a rim design whose inherent strength and torsional stiffness is readily apparent.
Unlike the Ksyrium Zircal offering, Mavic uses steel bladed straight pull spokes, which are not only wholly reliable, but also damp road impacts and help to defeat road vibration, adding some comfort to the rider. The sleek, offset rear hubshell is a machined structure with large aero flanges to accommodate the straight-pull bladed steel spokes. The alloy axle within rides on the micro-adjustable QRM+ sealed cartridge bearings, which are fast and smooth and can be easily adjusted while the wheel is mounted in the dropouts. The lightweight alloy FTS-L freehub engagement system is fast and reliable, as well as being easy to service and interchangeable. Mavic uses 20 spokes on this rear wheel, laced radially on the non-driveside, and 2x on the driveside. The scultped front hub uses the same oversized alloy axle and QRM+ design and also features taller aero flanges, that the spokes just disappear into. The high tension system creates a stiff wheelset that will rarely need truing. The bladed spokes, slightly elliptical rim shape, sleek hubshell and hidden nipples result in a responsive, fast rolling, aerodynamic wheelset.
To complete the wheel-tire system, Mavic includes their Yksion Pro Powerlink / Griplink SSC 700x25mm clincher tires. The single compound rubber is different rear and front, respectively. The Powerlink rear features a wide, harder durometer center for limited rolling resistance, and directional grip for fast acceleration. A wider poly breaker reduces the risk of puncture. The outer shoulders use a softer application of the same rubber, which ensures terrific grip when leaning over. The Griplink front is slightly softer in the center and on the shoulders, for better cornering grip. The poly breaker is narrower, as the front tire carries much less weight. The overall Yksion Pro tech includes a directional tread design, with angled channels that help with grip and sipe water away from the center section. The carcass is a 127tpi nylon casing which augments the rubber and has a true rounded shape. In between the rubber and the casing a wider Kevlar breaker is supple enough to match the casing, and has good puncture protection. These 210 gram 25mm tires are rated to 110psi, and combine with the elliptical rim for improved aerodynamics.
You also get Mavic's recommended carbon brake pads for Shimano/SRAM style pad holders, a set of 100/130mm BR601 quick release skewers, a multi-function tool for QRM+ adjustment and tubes. When the Cosmic Carbone 40C Wheelset was released it represented a new step forward in a carbon aero rim. The alloy insert greatly improved braking-induced heat management, stiffness and durability. Ideal for larger riders who still want lightweight aero performance, this clincher wheelset is sought after by cyclists and triathletes who can not only feel the difference, but require the performance Mavic delivers from this hybrid design. The TgMax technology opened a new direction for the company and no you see versions of the technology applied to many of their wheels. Stay true and trust in Mavic to bring you the best wheel options for you, not just the latest-greatest lightweight creation that won't deliver half the performance of the standout Cosmic Carbone 40C Wheelset
