Mavic's Exalith 2 braking system offers exceptional all-conditions stopping power and feel, and when found on a Ksyrium wheel, the all-rounder gets even better. The Ksyrium Pro Exalith Wheelset clincher wheel is built with a full complement of Mavic technology, with its machined Maxtal rim, QRM+ bearings, Zicral spokes and much more, and has the lighter weight 15mm internal rim width that Ksyrium riders know and love. Both serious enthusiasts and racing cyclists alike have long enjoyed the serious, highly predictable performance of the Ksyrium, especially when cornering and sprinting where trust is everything, and with Exalith 2, braking in the rain exceeds the overall performance.
The Ksyrium concept starts with Maxtal extruded alloy rims and Fore support and drilling. The rim is machined to reduce weight at non-crucial areas, and the ISM 3D milling process removes material between the spokes and just onto the sidewalls. This drops rotational weight for faster acceleration while the shaping improves aerodynamics. The double-butted Zicral spokes thread directly into the rim via a nipple carried by the spoke. The spoke holes are reinforced through lower rim bridge, leaving a sealed outer rim wall. The Zicral spokes are a flat, bladed design cable of very high tension. The rims are front and rear specific, with a 24mm profile. 20 straight-pull spokes are laced IsoPulse- 10 radial on the drive side, and 10 2x on the non-drive side for incredible lateral stiffness, energy transfer and perfect tracking at any speed.
Exalith 2 is a chemical treatment of the rim that penetrates the alloy to strengthen and add an even friction to the braking surface that is exceptionally durable and increases braking by around 20% in wet conditions over standard machined rims and normal pads. Mavic provides black, Exalith-specific brake pads are durable, quiet, and formulated to work perfectly with the rim treatment.
Standard Mavic technologies are featured, such as a SUP welded/machined joint, the machined aluminum hub features an oversized alloy axle, QRM+ micro-adjustable sealed cartridge bearing system, and the lightweight aluminum FTS-L engagement system/freehub body. The system is easily serviceable. The wheeset was designed for quick release use with 100mm Front and 130mm Rear dropouts. Mavic supplies their excellent BR601 QR's for sure hold under any circumstances. Despite weight just 1395 grams for set, the Ksyrium Pro Exalith was built for everyday performance riding.
To complete the wheel, Mavic includes their Yksion 700x25 clincher tires. On the rear wheel, a Powerlink SSC has a single compound rubber with a wide, harder durometer center for limited rolling resistance, and directional grip for fast acceleration. The outer shoulders use a softer application of the same rubber, which ensures terrific grip when leaning over. The tread design is directional, with angled channels that help with grip and sipe water away from the center section. The front carries a Yksion Pro Griplink SSC. The single compound rubber features a slightly softer center than the Powerlink, but still firm enough for low rolling resistance, and the shoulders use a significantly softer application of the same rubber, to ensure terrific cornering grip in all conditions. The siping pattern is much the same as the rear. Both tires are built on a 127tpi nylon casing which augments the rubber and has a true rounded shape. In between the rubber and the casing a Kevlar breaker is supple enough to match the casing, and has good puncture protection. The Powerlink's breaker is wider for extra protection on the more heavily weighted rear tire. These 25mmtires is rated to 110 max psi, which will roll smoothly with the stiffness of the 15mm internal width Ksyrium rim.
Excellent braking is a pre-requisite of any great alloy racing wheel, but if you routinely ride or race in wet weather, you will not find better braking performance on any other rim brake wheel. Cyclists in the Pacific Northwest and up and down the East Coast have embraced Exalith 2 equipped Ksyrium wheels, and for good reason. Now you can excel in all conditions with the confidence, speed, and control the Kysrium concept delivers.
