Description

Traditional aluminum or alloy road tubular rims are few are far between these days. Mavic has always offered these tubular options for cyclists who choose a handbuilt wheel option. Of course the Open Pro series rims have also been constructed with top-end Mavic technology. The Open Pro Tubular CD is a great example, and for those who know, it is essentially the new Reflex.

Start with the rim material. Mavic's extruded Maxtal alloy rims are 30% stronger than 6061 aluminum. The joining seam is arc-welded, then milled to exactly match the rest of the rim surface. This SUP process also make for an extremely strong joint. The entire braking surface is subjected to even plane CNC machining process that produces a precision braking surface that is perfectly parallel. The CD moniker refers to a chemical anodizing process that the entire rim is subjected to. This actually increases rim strength and resilience under load over time. In other words, CD is not just a coloring process, the color is a by product of the anodization. This also increases the durability and wear performance of the brake track.

Mavic uses a double eyelet, meaning on both inner and outer rim walls, but the reality is this eyelet is a one-piece continual eyelet that wraps both surfaces. Again, it makes the rim stronger and distributes spoke tension force across a greater surface area. You suffer a small weight penalty, but the effect on rim hold durability is pronounced. It also makes it next to impossible to lose a nipple in the rim. Mavic recommends the use of 12mm nipples with the Open Pro Tubular CD for best overall results. 700c tubular road tires from 20-22mm are recommended. We wouldn't have resistance to running a 23mm, max.

So, if you have been following along, the Open Pro Tubular CD road rim is strong, resilient, and capable of being built into an every day road tubular wheel. The lateral strength at tension is impressive for a box profile rim, and the vertical compliance and impact resistance is excellent. You build a wheel with this rim for mileage, durability, stopping power and to show your true tubular pedigree.
