Description
Bladed spokes require a different approach than traditional round spokes when it comes to truing wheels. Standard spoke wrenches grab the nipple just fine, but the spoke itself needs to be held stationary to prevent wind-up—that twisting that happens when you turn the nipple and the spoke rotates with it instead of the nipple threading down. The Park Tool BSH-4 solves this by gripping the flat section of the bladed spoke while you work the nipple, letting the spoke stay put while the nipple does all the turning.
The tool handles bladed spokes from 0.9mm to 2.0mm thick, which covers the range you'll encounter from manufacturers like DT Swiss, Sapim, and Pillar. The jaws are spring-loaded, so you squeeze to open, position the tool on the spoke, and release to grip. This leaves both hands free to work—one holding the BSH-4 in place, the other operating your spoke wrench. Without a holder like this, you'd be fighting the spoke's tendency to wind up with every quarter-turn of the nipple, then unwinding it and hoping you end up with the right tension.
Build quality matters here because the tool needs to grip without slipping and resist the rotational forces transmitted through the spoke. The BSH-4 uses a vinyl-coated steel construction that won't mar the spoke surface while maintaining enough grip to keep things stationary. The compact size lets you work close to the rim without interference, even on deep-section wheels where access gets tight.... Read More
