Description

Single-speed drivetrains and track bikes use 1/8" chains, which are wider than the 3/32" chains found on geared bikes. That width difference means standard chain whips designed for derailleur drivetrains won't engage properly with single-speed cogs. The Park Tool SR-18.2 solves this with a chain section specifically sized for 1/8" chains, giving you the grip needed to hold fixed gear cogs and single-speed freewheels while you break the lockring loose.

The tool pulls double duty as both a chain whip and a sprocket remover. The whip end holds the cog stationary while you turn the lockring with a separate tool, preventing the whole assembly from spinning freely. The remover end features hardened steel pins that engage freewheel notches directly, letting you unthread older freewheels from hub bodies without needing a separate remover for each freewheel brand. This combination approach means one tool handles both sides of the removal process for most single-speed setups.

Build quality follows Park Tool's professional-grade standards. The stamped steel head resists flexing under the torque loads that seized cogs demand, and the vinyl-dipped handle provides enough grip to bear down without slipping. The 1/8" chain section uses the same roller chain construction as the drivetrain it's designed to service, so the engagement between tool and cog stays positive even when corrosion or threadlocker makes removal difficult....
