Description
Wheel building and truing require knowing what's actually happening with spoke tension, not just eyeballing it or going by feel. The Park Tool TM-1 Spoke Tension Meter removes the guesswork by giving you a numerical reading you can track and compare across every spoke in the wheel. Squeeze the tool onto a spoke, read the deflection on the scale, then reference the included conversion chart to translate that number into actual tension values. It's the difference between "this feels about right" and knowing you've got consistent tension throughout the build.
The TM-1 works with round spokes from 1.8mm to 2.3mm diameter, covering standard 14-gauge spokes, 15-gauge, and the common double-butted sizes like 2.0/1.8/2.0mm. The conversion chart accounts for different spoke materials and gauges since a steel spoke and an aluminum spoke deflect differently under the same tension. Park Tool includes charts for most common spoke types, and their website hosts additional charts for spokes that weren't around when your meter shipped.
For wheel builders, the value shows up in consistency. Matching tension across all spokes on a given side of the wheel matters more than hitting some theoretical ideal number. The TM-1 lets you identify the outliers—the spoke that's 20% tighter or looser than its neighbors—so you can correct before the wheel leaves the stand. For truing existing wheels, the meter helps diagnose whether a wobble comes from a loose spoke, an overtightened spoke, or something structural.... Read More
