Most cycling fans have seen PRO sponsored professional cyclists riding PRO wheels in top-level world and continental cycling events. The Shimano-family company has long offered three-spoke and disc wheel designs for time trial and triathlon use and this clincher Disc Wheel was built for lower category cyclists and age group triathletes that are looking for windcheating speed but lack the budget and mechanics that enable the top riders to sport full carbon tubular wheels. With it's aluminum brake track and simple clincher tire set-up, anyone can ride this wheel, in wet or dry conditions, and still gain an aero advantage.

The central structure of this carbon disc wheel design is built as a sandwich-like application, with layers of carbon and rohacell-structure foam. The carbon provides the exoskeleton, while the lightweight rohacell cores prove extremely shear- and pressure-resistant, giving the wheel it' lateral stiffness and forward response under pedaling load. Rohacell was developed for airplane applications, where weight and such strength are crucial to safety. You get unmatched strength to weight ratios from these closed cell structures. The 3K carbon disc layers are laid up in a 2x2 configuration with Twill-weave pattern. A matte coating is applied, with a design that hold air along the surface, even at the hub to reduce drag and maintain a cleaner path through the moving air.

The sandwich structure is bonded to the aluminum outer rim, which provides the clincher hook interface and a cleanly machined brake track. PRO uses a clean large oval shape for longer valve use, and valve access, also allowing more pump designs to work for inflation. The rim construct is centered around a 130mm wide Shimano Ultegra 6800 11-speed hub. The freehub body is durable steel, which adds a little weight, but at the hub it is less impactful.
