Description

Hydraulic brake lines don't play well with frame couplers—the fittings and hose construction weren't designed to be disconnected and reconnected repeatedly, which creates a problem for Break-Away frame owners who want modern braking performance without permanent installation. The Ritchey Break-Away Quick Disconnect Brake solves this by building a dedicated disconnect point into the hydraulic line itself, letting you separate the frame at the coupler without bleeding the system or cutting anything. Each unit handles one brake line, so you'll need two if you're running front and rear hydraulic brakes on a Break-Away build.

The disconnect mechanism uses a self-sealing design that keeps air out of the system during separation and reconnection. You're not introducing contamination or creating the conditions for spongy lever feel every time you pack the bike—the sealed connection maintains system integrity across repeated use. This matters because the whole point of a Break-Away frame is frequent disassembly for travel, and a brake system that needs attention after every trip defeats the purpose of the platform.

Installation requires routing the hydraulic line through the disconnect fitting, which means you'll need to cut your existing brake line and install new fittings on both sides. This isn't a drop-in addition to an existing setup—it's a modification that becomes part of the brake system. Ritchey designed the disconnect to handle the pressures and fluid compatibility requirements of modern hydraulic systems, but the initial installation does require proper brake bleeding procedures and familiarity with hydraulic line work. If you're comfortable with brake bleeds and line routing, the installation is straightforward. If not, a shop can handle the setup and verify everything seals correctly before you start packing the bike into cases.... Read More
