Description
The popularity of gravel and all road cycling speaks for itself. Cyclists don't need to choose on or off road, or be concerned about gravel roads or rough country lanes. Those who know Tom Ritchey's story will be aware that he has long pushed the boundaries of surfaces and terrain. More than 50 years ago, Tom Ritchey began riding, researching, designing, and building legendary bicycle frames and components that have inspired generations of cyclists to experience great rides. This cycling icon influenced legions within the bicycle industry, and over the years Ritchey-sponsored riders have won countless championships. Few individuals in the sport can also claim to have served such a wide variety of athletes and recreational cyclists through numerous design advancements and excellence in frames, forks, stems, bars, seatposts, wheels, and more.
As the 50th anniversary of Tom's Ritchey's achievements has come, many longtime fans will have a memory of their most special Ritchey purchase, and while there will be numerous to list, we suspect the decade-defying Road Logic Frameset will rise to the top. The advances in road disc brake systems makes it easier to build the best bike possible for the conditions of the open and rough road. Using the proven and desirable Ritchey Logic heat-treated, double-butted directional steel tubing, the pioneer has designed the capable 2nd generation Outback Frameset with thru-axle frame and carbon disc fork resulting in the forgiving, superior ride quality Ritchey's steel frames are known for. Sold here in a special colorway to celebrate 50 years of innovation and practical cycling endeavors, this limited run of Outback 50th Anniversary Framesets won't last long, so get yours while you can!
Updated in 2020 the Outback sports several practical and adaptable features that offer riders the ability to chase epic ride experiences beyond the end of the road and the end of the day. Rack and fender mounts help to keep things dry and expand the load-carrying capacity for longer bikepacking adventures, while clearance for 700c x 48mm or 650b x 2.0" tires opens up a whole new world of possibilities. The frame accepts flat-mount disc calipers, and the new all-carbon fiber Ritchey Adventure Fork with multi-purpose mounts on the legs gives you more places to stow the supplies you gather at the last cafe.
The geometry will respond more like a stable endurance road bike to most riders, such as in the Medium frameset, with a 50mm fork rake that speeds up the handling when necessary. A 453mm chainstay length and 1061mm wheelbase favors stability without sacrificing responsiveness. This is not a cyclocross bike, but an all road design that handle quickly when necessary, but tracks well over rougher terrain on straighter roads or paths. The vertical compliance of the tubeset is aided in the rear by the arched seatstays, which lead to the seat cluster with an integrated collar, for a 27.2mm diameter seatpost.
By using opposing tube oval shapes, shaped chainstays, and keeping a bridge across the seatstays, lateral stiffness is much better than you'd expect from a steel frame. Of course power transfer and control in the rear of the bike is assisted by the 12/142mm thru-axle dropout. The flat mount disc brake tab is cleanly inside the rear triangle, with some space for mud to clear, not collect. The frame is designed for longer cable housing runs for brake and rear derailleur, which keeps the shift cable itself cleaner and operating smoothly. The drop-in integrated headset is included, and you will need a 28.6 clamp size for a front derailleur. The bottom bracket shell is a 68mm BSC threaded system. The carbon Ritchey Adventure Fork carries a flat mount disc caliper interface, the thru-axle fork is for 12/100mm hub use, and is painted to match the frame.
The steel Outback Frameset balances the multi-purpose requirements in ways that are surprising. Riders seeking a bike able to effortlessly switch between fire roads, trails, tarmac, long distance mixed-terrain adventures, bikepacking and everything in-between will find the Outback a prime option for enjoying such differing and distinct disciplines of riding. That is where the needs and requirements of cyclists are taking the industry. You can have one "road" bike that meets all your needs. Most cyclists don't race, and don't really want to. They want to ride, be able to explore the horizon, commute, and challenge themselves in new ways. Remember the 48mm tire size is a max standard. You can certainly ride 28-32mm models when on pavement. Also keep in mind that rim width, as well as variation in tire manufacturing will determine your actual max tire size. You have options. And isn't that the point of the Outback frameset? So if a forgiving ride, predictable but responsive handling, and contemporary features are on your new bike checklist, the Ritchey Outback Frameset offers new options and opportunities as you seek to build your new bike.
To celebrate Ritchey’s 50th anniversary and Tom’s enduring and influential spirit of off-road adventure, the 50th Anniversary Outback proudly sports a Half Moon Blue paint scheme - an amazingly beautiful light blue to deep blue fade that truly moves the soul. Additionally, this limited-edition gravel rig is adorned with special Ritchey logos that reference the company’s history and the influence Palo Alto, California has had on Tom.
