Rim brake bikes are still offered and many cyclists still have a rim brake bike as their primary and/or secondary ride, so Roval still offers high quality, strong performing rim brake wheels with more modern features and design. The Fusee line has been their alloy wheel option for years and the SLX 24 is one of the best yet at just $800. A lightweight wheel with clean aesthetics, high rigidity and exceptional durability, the SLX 24 is a fully featured, high-performance alloy wheel. The E5 aluminum alloy used in the SLX 24 is notable for its exceptional elongation characteristics. This translates to aluminum that can be more precisely and extensively extruded to its final shape while retaining impressive strength at minimal weight. It makes for a rim that can handle severe abuse in real-world conditions without leaving you stranded. With this rim brake version you get a CNC alloy brake track that minimizes any effect of the rim joint for smooth, sure, and powerful braking. The tubeless ready, 20mm internal width of the SLX 24 rim is optimized for use with modern, wider tires, providing them with the right amount of sidewall support to facilitate surefooted handling in all conditions. Wider tires roll faster, and are more comfortable than narrow tires, hence these wheels can truly benefit any older rim brake set-up, even if the largest tire you can fit in your frameset is 25mm. The wider rims keep the wheel shape more appropriate and slightly more aero efficient in relation to the 24mm external rim width, even if you run a tire from 23-28mm.

With dual primary goals of long life and easy serviceability informing every Roval wheel system, the development team looked to Switzerland. The SLX 24 builds the wheel outward form their AF1 hubset, while deploying the ultra-reliable, rapid engagement DT 350 star-ratchet freehub internals for smooth power transmission and long-term dependability. Similarly, DT Swiss Competition straight-pull spokes were chosen to lace hub to rim, fastened with external brass Pro-Lock nipples. The rim brake wheelset carries 20 spokes up front, race in a radial pattern, while the 24 spoke rear is laced 1x on the non-drive side, 2x on the drive side, all at high tension.

The total wheelset weight is 1495 grams, which is a truly respectable weight for a wheelset that has the strength and stability required for everywhere from everyday training and mileage riding to cyclocross races races. The tubeless ready design ensures hassle-free setup and trouble-free riding for those who choose that option, but using a tube and standard clincher tire works great as well. Roval includes tubeless and valves, as well as 100/130mm standard steel quick release skewers for a secure hold at the dropouts.
