Description

Every hydraulic brake hose connection depends on two small components that most riders never think about until something leaks. The olive creates the seal against the lever body when the compression fitting tightens, while the barb insert supports the hose wall from inside and prevents collapse under pressure. Shimano's BH-59 olive and insert set provides both pieces for a single connection point. The brass olive deforms permanently during installation, which is exactly how it's supposed to work. That deformation creates the seal. It also means you cannot reuse an olive once removed, so keep spares on hand if you're doing your own brake work.

This second-generation fitting works across Shimano's BH59, BH62, BH63, and BH96 brake hose lines. The compatibility extends to both standard lever connections and J-kit configurations, which Shimano uses on many factory-installed brake systems. Road hydraulic setups using the ST-RS685 and ST-R785 levers also use this fitting. If you're shortening hoses on a new build, swapping bars, or replacing a damaged line, you'll need fresh olives and inserts at every connection you remake.

Installation requires cutting the hose square with a sharp blade, sliding the olive onto the hose before inserting the barb, then threading the compression nut into the lever body. The nut compresses the olive against the lever housing, creating a fluid-tight seal. A properly installed fitting holds system pressure without leaking, but a damaged olive or misaligned barb will introduce air or weep fluid. Since both components cost little compared to a brake bleed or a failed connection on the trail, replacing them during any hose work is standard practice.... Read More
