Description
SIL-TEC is Shimano's friction-reducing surface treatment, and the CN-HG95 applies it across both the inner and outer link plates. The process embeds fluorine particles into the plating rather than just coating the surface, which means the treatment doesn't wear off as quickly as conventional finishes. The practical result is a chain that runs quieter, sheds mud and grime more effectively, and resists the kind of corrosion that builds up when you're riding through wet conditions regularly. For mountain bike applications where chains see constant contamination, that durability matters.
The HG-X directional design separates this chain from Shimano's road offerings. Each side of the chain is shaped differently: the outer plates are optimized for front derailleur shifts while the inner plates handle rear derailleur engagement. This asymmetry means the chain has a correct installation orientation, with markings on the outer plates indicating which side faces out. Install it backward and shifting suffers, particularly under load when you need crisp engagement the most. The directional architecture also includes outer plate shaping that reduces chain suck, a common annoyance on muddy climbs where the chain wants to stick to the chainring instead of releasing cleanly.
Shimano designed the CN-HG95 specifically for Dyna-Sys 10-speed mountain drivetrains. It works across the range from Deore through XTR, including SLX, XT, and Saint. The chain ships with 116 links and includes a connecting pin for installation. You'll need a compatible chain tool to press the pin, and once installed, that link becomes permanent. If you prefer the convenience of tool-free removal for cleaning, KMC 10-speed quick links work as an alternative, though Shimano's official method remains the connecting pin. The 6.1mm width matches the tighter spacing of 10-speed cassettes, so this chain won't work properly on 9-speed or older drivetrains where the wider chain would bind between cogs.... Read More
