Cross-compatibility is the real story with the CS-HG800. Most 11-speed road cassettes lock you into a road-specific freehub body, which becomes a problem the moment you want to swap a wheelset built around an MTB hub onto a gravel or all-road bike. Shimano borrowed the cantilevered largest-cog design from their 11-speed mountain cassettes to sidestep that limitation, and the result is an Ultegra-tier cassette that installs on both 10-speed and 11-speed road freehubs as well as standard HG mountain freehubs. If you're building a gravel bike around wheels that weren't spec'd for a road drivetrain, this is the cassette that makes the parts talk to each other.

The 11-34T spread (11-13-15-17-19-21-23-25-27-30-34) gives you a proper bailout gear for loaded touring, steep gravel, or hilly road riding without giving up the close-ratio steps at the top of the range where you spend most of your time. Cogs are nickel-plated steel for corrosion resistance, the top five are riveted together on an aluminum spider carrier for stiffness and cleaner shifts, and the whole cassette uses HG-EV tooth profiling that mirrors what Shimano runs on higher-tier groups. Shimano has also validated it to E-MTB durability standards, so it holds up under the torque loads that motor-assisted drivetrains put through a drivetrain.

Compatibility matters here — this cassette needs a medium-cage (GS) rear derailleur to handle the 34T large cog. Short-cage road derailleurs don't have the capacity, so if you're running an RD-R8000-SS or similar, you'll need to swap to the GS version before installing this.
