Description

Running a 1x drivetrain on a gravel bike pushes the chainline outward compared to a 2x setup, which creates clearance benefits that matter when you're running wide tires through mud and debris. The GRX FC-RX810-1 uses a 49.7mm chainline that positions the chain further from the chainstay than the 46.9mm chainline on the 2x GRX cranksets. That extra clearance reduces chain slap, minimizes mud buildup between the chainring and frame, and lets you run larger tire volumes without interference. If you're building a dedicated gravel or adventure bike around a 1x system, the chainline geometry on this crankset supports that approach rather than just adapting road components.

The crankset shares its Hollowtech II construction with Shimano's road lineup, using cold-forged aluminum crank arms with a hollow internal structure that balances stiffness against weight. The 24mm steel spindle integrates with the drive-side arm and extends through the bottom bracket shell to accept the non-drive arm via a pinch bolt interface. Bottom bracket compatibility includes both threaded SM-BBR60 shells and press-fit SM-BB72 options, covering the range of frame standards you'll encounter across gravel bikes. The asymmetric 4-arm spider design matches Shimano's road cranksets, with reinforced construction to handle the additional stress of off-road use.

Shimano offers the FC-RX810-1 with 40T or 42T chainring options across 170mm, 172.5mm, and 175mm crank arm lengths. The chainring uses a narrow-wide tooth profile for chain retention over rough terrain, which matters on a 1x system where there's no front derailleur cage to catch a dropped chain. The 110mm BCD 4-bolt interface accepts aftermarket chainrings if you want to change tooth counts later, though the GRX-specific chainring geometry optimizes shifting with GRX rear derailleurs. Pair this crankset with an 11-40T or 11-42T cassette and the RD-RX812 rear derailleur to build out a complete 1x GRX drivetrain.... Read More
