The trend in cross-country has been for shorter, less aggressive toe spikes on the super stiff carbon soled-shoes. Shimano offers these low-profile spikes for shoes such as the SPD-XC90 (and others listed below). With a central threaded steel spike inserted into a resin clover-shaped base, the assembly is very simple, yet effective, especially on firm pack or hard surfaces. The spikes complement the tread rubber and shapes that sit below the carbon sole, offering combination grip that is effective for all but loose, soft soil and heavy mud.

Shimano provides a two-ended spike tool. One interface fits the clover-shape design, and the other is a more standard 6-sided tool that fits many spike offerings. Each package contains 4 spikes and the tool. Shimano pre-applies blue threadlocker to prevent the spikes from backing out accidentally, or over time. This compound will not make the tool inoperable. We recommend the use of a simple grease as well, even with the locking compound, to reduce the chance of corrosion in the threads.
