While it might be Shimano's entry level competition shoe, the SH-XC51 packs a punch. There's plenty of trickle-down tech from higher end shoes to make this a viable choice for anyone looking for the ultimate in value based performance, be it the weekend racer, commuter or budget-minded performance rider.
The XC51 upper is made of tough but pliant synthetic material that does a nice job conforming to your foot. One micro-adjustable ratchet buckle and two Velcro hook and loop straps take care of securing your foot in the shoe. Shimano's proven Dynalast fit works without issue and surprises many new Shimano shoe users as to how seemingly perfect these shoes fit.
For sole duty, Shimano choose a stiff and rugged glass fiber reinforced polyamide sole. This is fancy-speak for a durable plastic sole that is reinforced with a fiberglass laminate. What you end up with is a sole that is stiff, light and durable, but doesn't cost as much to produce as a full carbon product. The XC51 lugs offer solid traction and mud shedding capacity. The front of the sole has two threaded ports for included Shimano plastic toe spikes or optional metal spikes. The XC51 sole accepts the industry standard two-hole SPD type mountain cleat.
