Shimano's 12-speed road groupsets moved the standard forward by adding a cog without demanding a wheel change, and the Ultegra CS-R8101 cassette is the piece that makes that possible on hubs you probably already own. It fits the traditional HG 11-speed freehub body along with the newer HG-L2 12-speed spline, so a drivetrain upgrade doesn't automatically drag a wheelset purchase along with it. The tooth profiles have also been refined from the original R8100 to work cleanly with both Di2 electronic and mechanical 12-speed shifting.

Hyperglide+ is the technology doing the heavy lifting here. The tooth shaping and shift ramps are designed to move the chain up and down the cassette under full pedaling load, which matters most when you're out of the saddle on a climb or sprinting for a town-line and don't want to soft-pedal through a shift. It's the same shifting logic Shimano developed for their mountain groupsets, adapted to the tighter gear jumps of a road cassette.

Two ranges cover most road use cases. The 11-30T runs 11-12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-24-27-30 with tight one-tooth jumps through the middle of the cassette, which keeps your cadence steady in a paceline or on rolling terrain where small adjustments matter.
