Shimano's mountain bike wheels are among the most durable and well spec'ed options on the market. from the bearings and hubs, through spoke lacing and rim technology, few complete wheels even come close for the dollar. The WH-M8000 Tubeless Wheelset is considered the Race version, and with a 20mm internal (23.9mm external) rim width, this wheel can easily carry the wider (up to 2.25") or very low air pressures run by XC tubeless tire riders. Set up for 15/100mm front and 12/142mm rear thru-axles, with Shimano's excellent Center Lock disc brake rotor interface, this is a high performance wheelset any cross country trail rider will love.

Both front and rear wheels feature an M8000 XT hubset that now offers reduced weight with the added stiffness of their E-thru-axle system. Oversized alloy axles spin on Shimano's proven angular contact ball bearing cup and cone system, sealed by the labyrinth and contact seals. This system carries wheel loads through the hub and bearing in a natural alignment to the forces of the rim at every angle, adding significant bearing and hub life. The system is fully serviceable. The steel freehub body gets the same bearing treatment with contact seals and Shimano's ultra reliable, smooth, and efficient engagement system.

The 18.8mm deep extruded alloy rim has a welded and milled joint, and employs UST tubeless technology. Both the front and rear rims are asymmetric to balance riding and braking forces. The load is carried via 28 straight-pull, butted (2.0-1.5-2.0) stainless steel, black anodized spokes. The wheels are easily trued by a competent bike mechanic or wheel-educated cyclist. Center Lock is a simple and extremely effective spine-style disc rotor mounting system. Shimano's Center Lock rotors fit perfectly, and can be installed and removed in seconds with common tools.

We have never understood why Shimano's wheels get less hype and press. Fantastically durable, while delivering excellent performance, these completely serviceable wheels may lack the flash or sexy names of some aftermarket options, but none of those can touch the quality in the price points.
