Choosing between the three CS-M8000 gearing options really comes down to whether you're running a 2x or 1x setup and how much low-end climbing gear you actually need. Shimano's XT CS-M8000 11-speed cassette anchors the Deore XT M8000 drivetrain with three range options—11-40T, 11-42T, and 11-46T—and uses Rhythm Step gear progression to tighten the jumps between cogs where you're most likely to be shifting under load. The 11-46T version is 1x-specific and pairs with a long-cage derailleur, while the 11-40T and 11-42T work in either 2x or 1x builds.

Construction is a mix of steel cogs for wear resistance and aluminum for the largest sprocket and carrier, which is where most of the weight savings comes from. The largest cog sits inboard above the drive-side flange, so if your wheelset uses a hub with a tall drive-side flange, check clearance before ordering the 11-46T—spoke interference is a known issue with certain builds. Everything mounts to a standard Shimano HG freehub body, and it plays with either Shimano or SRAM 11-speed drivetrains, but XD drivers are a no-go.

If you're stepping up from a smaller-range cassette to the 11-46T, plan on a new chain at the same time. The extra wrap around the 46T cog eats up chain length, and reusing an old chain that was sized for a 40T or 42T is a common way to end up with shifting problems or a snapped chain on the first big climb.
