Description

Shimano's XT Trail pedals have become the go-to pedal for many pure trail and all-mountain riders. With the development of the 11 speed XT M8000 groupset, Shimano has updated the M785 dual-sided XT Trail pedals. Several areas have been addressed, most in the re-designed platform. Shimano's goal was to increase the pedal-to-shoe contact area, and increase overall power transmission efficiency.

The new, machined platform is 3.3mm wider than the M785 generation. This may not sound like much, but applied over the length of the pedal, that increases shoe contact by 11.7%. That is a significant difference over an already highly effective Trail pedal design. Shimano also shaved off a half millimeter from the platform thickness, getting the ball of the foot closer to the pedal axle for a slight increase in power transmission efficiency and a smidge more ground clearance. Again, keep in mind we are comparing this to a proven design. The increased shoe-to-pedal stability is noticeable, and depending on your shoes, you may well notice your outer foot fatigues less on long rides.

You still get all the XT level standards you expect: the anodized forged aluminum body, stainless steel hardware, chromoly spindle, sealed cartridge bearings and adjustable release tension. The single release (side action) SH-51 Cleatset is still packaged with the PD-M8000 pedals. Long considered the best value in SPD pedals, XT level offerings are durable, completely functional, resilient to trail damage, and serviceable. Don't disregard Shimano's overall level of quality and engineering when choosing pedals. A few extra grams isn't worth reliability issues. Trail riders who have loved the solid feel and bike connection with XT Trail pedals should be able to feel in increase in foot/shoe support with the M8000 design. We expect to see the new pedals on primary bikes, with the still solid M785's swapped over the back-up or commuter bike.
