Description

Shimano's XTR hubs are a fascinating mix of old school technology, exotic materials, Japanese engineering, and precision manufacturing. The XTR M9010 Rear Hub is the 12/142mm thru-axle version within the M9000 series, and it carries the XTR tradition of exceptional design and execution forward. Even XC race bikes are rocking thru-axle systems now, and the increased width and stiffness is readily felt by the rider.

Shimano precisely machines the alloy hub shell to exacting specifications. XTR has long employed the lightweight, durable, and strong titanium freehub body to great effect. This 8-11 speed MTB body won't scratch or get grooved by individual cogs. Engagement is spot-on, with the 36 point pawl system that delivers rapid reaction, as well as precision for slow-speed technical riding. Shimano believes strongly in exceptionally high quality steel bearings, seals, and it's cup and cone design. This angular contact system reduces potential friction from side and lateral loads on the axle that parallel surface sealed cartridge bearings are simply forced to battle. Shimano believes this system is the best way to handle this stress while maintaining speed, and reducing unnecessary bearing and race wear. The engineers can show you the data, but proof is in the feel when riding, and in the sheer lack of hub issues and service beyond simple cleaning and lubing. With the new axle design the engineers reduced as much weight as possible in the bearing system.

For the M9010, the oversized 16mm alloy axle has been machined for an exact fit. The collars and fitments have cone wrench flats for adjustment and service. The Center Lock spline disc rotor mount provides a snug, perfect fit with RT99 IceTech rotors, and the interface is simple and fast for rotor mounting and removal. The traditional flanges accept j-bend spokes. Due to Shimano's commitment to engineering excellence and durability, their hubs will never be the lightest available, even in the World Cup, race-level XTR line. But wheel performance is impacted more by rotational weight than overall weight, and in the end, precise, reliable performance from the rear hub is more crucial to success than gram weight. If you are looking to build an exceptionally reliable, serviceable, rear mountain disc wheel for your 12/142mm thru-axle bike, know that the M9010 has been engineered and built to be the best performing rear hub on the market. And isn't that what matters?
