At a quick glance the M980 XTR cassette looks like a standard XTR cassette with another gear added to the cluster. Upon closer inspection you will find several important and significant improvements. The teeth have special profiling to work with Shimano HG-X asymmetrical chains and the Shimano Shadow style rear derailleur.

If you were impressed with Hyperglide shifting on previous XT cassettes, you will be amazed at HG-X shifting and glide. The cogs rest on an oversize 3-piece spider arm for light weight and torsional rigidity. The upper 5 titanium cogs are constructed of titanium for durability and weight savings. Almost all of the cogs are drilled to shave a few extra grams. Lightweight alloy lockring rounds out the package.
