Description

The XTR M9020 Trail Pedal is an updated and improved version of the previous generation Trail pedal. When Shimano started building XTR-level components in both Race and Trail configurations, the engineers included development of a new pedal system that not only met XTR-level standards, but also recognized the requirements of the trail rider, most of whom choose to wear shoes that are quite as stiff as XC race shoes. Experience in straight platform pedals and clip assisted platforms informed the design process, and the end result was a sleek, gram conscious pedal that offered the minimal requirement for an effective platform with SPD retention. This was the M980 pedal, and it was well received by mountain bikers. The updates were made with more research and continual feedback from Shimano sponsored professional riders.
The first thing you will notice is the attached platform that extends from the center of the pedal - it adds an amazing 160% more surface area over the M980. Bearing placement has been widened to better distribute the pedaling and leverage forces. Combine that with an additional 5.8mm of width and you have total stability for the gnarliest terrain with much more shoe contact than the M980. The new platform also has knurls and cut outs for added shoe traction. These two key aspects represent the crucial function of the Trail pedal. Softer soled shoes, which provide a better walking platform, as well as provide grip and feel when not clipped in or dabbing the foot, also have more torsional flexibility, which better suit the high and low speed manipulations required by aggressive trail conditions. As new shoes have evolved to best suit the riding style, so have the pedals. With the large platform area and superior grip, the XTR Trail Pedal still provides exceptional power transfer under massive pedaling loads.
The rest of the pedal typifies XTR-level products. The serviceable pedal spins on smooth, high quality Shimano cartridge bearings that almost actually never need service. Tension is adjustable for release on both sides of the pedal with a 3mm hex key. One pair of the veritable steel SPD SH-51 single release cleats and mounting hardware are included. This standard system is used across all Shimano mountain pedals, so you can easily switch bikes or pedals if necessary. The design clears mud with in the body design, as well as from the cleat interface. The polished chromoly steel axle is stiff, durable, and houses the 8mm hex interface for installation and removal from the back side of the crank arm. At just 385 grams, the M9020 Trail Pedal set will inspire confidence and impeccable bike control for any all-mountain or general trail rider who wants a little more platform. Ride the highest quality, top performing pedals you can buy, Shimano XTR.
