Description

Besides it's impressive strength and discipline versatility and clean, assertive graphic design, the most noteworthy feature of the Ritchey WCS Carbon Matrix C220 Stem is the bar clamp zone and faceplate design. This is where the stem's namesake is derived. The C220 identifier effectively means Circumference 220 degrees. In effect, the stem clamp wraps over the bar, yet you can still fit a 31.8mm diameter bar directly into the clamping zone without feeding it from the side. This design produces a more balanced and circumferential clamping force on the bar over of the more two-dimensional, vise-like force of a standard faceplate design, yet is mechanic friendly. At the rear of the stem, the clamping mechanism to the fork steerer (1⅛") is fairly standard, with opposing hex bolts that get torqued against each other for optimal compression, especially on carbon.

The WCS Carbon Matrix C220 features matrix carbonalloy technology. This means the stem has a 3D net forged 7075 alloy core that is encased in high-modulus carbon fiber. Imagine taking a standard C220 stem that has been pared down to a super thin thickness then wrapping it in carbon fiber. You basically have a thin alloy core with a thicker formed carbon layered structure enveloping it. It is an effective design and uses of two materials that benefit from the best qualities of both. It improves fatigue strength over the alloy version of this stem (not that it was ever a problem), but more important and relevant is the fact the construction makes the stem stiffer, while providing better damping of road vibration.

The combination of the matrix system and the C220 clamp design delivers a stable, stout, and confidence building cockpit. And beyond strength and improved ride quality, the stem is just gorgeous. The matte coating resists wear and cleans up nicely after workouts. All bolts are standard Hex type, and torque specs are clearly listed on the stem.

Great price. The thin alloy skeleton of the Matrix weighs in an ounce heavier than the all carbon Ritchey stems but keeps it stiff and provides a small sense of security. Matched them with Superlogic carbon bars. Fantastic feel and performance.
